The Matrix Resurrections starring John Wick Keanu Reeves continues Neo’s story from The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, and it flopped pretty badly, apparently losing around a 100 million dollars. Maybe there are many reasons for why Resurrections flopped, but one of the biggest weaknesses about it is that it’s a terrible sequel. And the best way to understand and learn from that is to contrast its sequel aspects to positive ones we’ve discussed before. Here’s why The Matrix 4 is a bad sequel and how it suffers as a result.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski, this sci-fi thriller series sequel revisits Neo (Keanu Reeves), who seems to be feeling disconnected from his reality as he discusses his personal issues with a therapist-like Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris). As he’s also apparently taking some blue pills, old characters from his past start reappearing, offering him a red pill and some missing truths about his actual reality. Carrie-Anne Moss co-stars as Trinity, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe.

It was a very big disappointment.

If you understand the story of the matrix then it makes perfect sense as to why the 4th story went in the direction it did.
Kin says
This movie seems to have the exact same issue every Terminator movie has had after the second one. It's trying to basically copy what was cool about their most successful movie and ride on it instead of actually doing what those movies did at the time: Something new. Something different. Something unexpected.

After watching this whole video, I disagree. The first mistake was making another Matrix movie. It already had a bow on it.
RDeathmark says
this should have been an animatrix of a few short stories, an animatrix focusing on IO, one focusing on the 'in universe matrix/matrix sequel', one focusing on neo and trinity reuniting
D says
it’s not a Sequel. See the thing is, it PURPOSELY repeats nostalgic scenes. Which is why the narrator calls it a “bad sequel”. It is a reboot
D says
I didn’t hate this movie. It wasn’t “The Matrix”. Or even “Revolutions”. It’s a straight up reboot. It was so weird without Morpheus But besides that, it had some cool scenes. I mean, of course it’s fan service but i enjoyed it

Even the rage tracks at the end is a worst version than the original

The actor who played Bane was a way better Smith. He did Hugo as good as Hugo lol. They where interchangeable. He felt super dangerous and was able to play all of Hugo's mannerisms. It's all in the facial features and the new Matrix got someone who looked too baby faced and not nearly as intimidating. I'm amazed how one of the original creators doesn't understand their own franchises and why it works. Well she might know but it certainly doesn't come through in this movie.
Kevin W. Clark says
The movie suffers from all the current day bad Hollywood troupes and egotistically thinks it's doing something ground breaking. But it's the same old bs you will see in a lot of hijacked properties. Cycle and repeat. You have to "deconstruct" old characters (more points if they're white males) to the point where they are broken instead of using them in new constructive and positive ways. I really think it's because a new generation of writers have out blown egos thinking they know better (while making society worse, like thinking we don't need a law enforcement system or severely crippling it to the point where it can't do the job properly). That aside, the messaging is often a detriment to the story and takes priority. They need to be balanced properly. Once again the writers had an egotistical smugness insulting the audience over what they want to see in the very dialogue. You know what happens when you come off overly abrasive?? People often won't like you and don't want to listen to what you have to say. Something that a group of modern writers don't seem to understand. The biggest problem with the writing is the structure. Who are we watching for 2/3rds of the movie?? The answer is Neo. He is suppose to be the main character and the one developing as we follow him. This is where my point earlier where the modern messages are a detriment to the story comes in. The payoff to his development and focus is given to Trinity. It's not a smart twist, it's ultimately a giant waste of the time we invested in watching Neo up to that point. It also has nothing to do with gender but just the practice of good storytelling. If we had started with Trinity instead of Neo and followed her instead then this ending would have worked. I like her character but you need to understand the purpose of the structure you are writing. It breaks the basic fundamentals of story structure and not in a good way. It actually might have been interesting to have the reboot follow Trinity instead of Neo and see the action and perceptions from a new angle. It would have also completed the visual idea on the duality of those characters more than the alternative that we got. Now that would have been saying something with your visual artistry. Three movies with Neo as the lead and then Trinity waking up and having three more with her as the lead. Both of them complimenting each other and having an equal footing. I actually might like that idea more than just Neo being the lead throughout all movies but it needs to be handle respectively and not insultingly or blaming and shaming. That's the thing, a lot of things are not being handled in a positive way, they are used to place blame and shame. That has got to change. There's no equality in that behavour. Anyways having the duo works well for marketing in the end as well. I can see it. One side of the box set has Neo and the other has Trinity. The final movie has them both learning a bigger truth. However I still like my idea behind what the Matrix universe is and what the Architect's dialogue meant. He tells Neo that Zion has fallen many times and there has been many versions of the one. It shows Neos on the monitors. I wanted those to be the past versions just as they looked which means that the "real world" was the true simulation created to give the inhabitants another illusion of choice in escaping the false simulations. The machines realized that people's minds would only come to accept the first Matrix if they had some unconscious feeling of the choice of freedom being achievable. This is why Neo was able to control the sentinels outside of what he thought was the Matrix simulation and why he could tap into the limbo train station.

I walked out, I didnt want it corrupting my view of the amazing predecessors. As is so elegantly pointed out by the producer of this video, none of the narratives were advanced, There was such potential for so much more when expressing the 'how' for Neo's return. For instance there was speculation that Neo's soul perhaps gets trapped within the matrix giving rise for an infinite new world of possibilities. This would explain, actually f^($#n explain how Neo's powers extend to 'both worlds', a soul or part thereof trapped in the matrix code could explain how the machines were affected by Neo despite not being in the matrix to perhaps hack the machines. On top of this premise , extending other aspects of the narrative of 'what next' can be build and issues, such as the battery paradox could perhaps have been resolved. The world was your oyster guys!!!
Rajah Iyer says
"It does not build on, or upgrade things from before" , "..doesn't advance on any narrative threads…" clap clap 🙂

I still haven't seen Ressurections…. I tried to watch The Rise of Skywalker for the first time toward the end of 2020, and I only lasted about twenty minutes before I turned it off, so I suppose there was never a timeline in which I was going to sit through a fifth Matrix movie. And yeah, I said fifth. That's how much I care about this franchise. If you know, you know. I saw the Matrix when I was way too young because my dad loved them, and I'm 26 now, so I'm not being at all hyperbolic when I say that I look back on The Matrix and their basic premise as a fun and formative part of my childhood. When this movie was announced, I changed the name of my and my friends' Discord server, formerly called "the Construct". I think that subconsciously, I distanced myself from my emotional connection to the franchise. I chose not to let this be another Rise of Skywalker, and I chose correctly, apparently.
This was supposed to be a funny comment when I started typing it, but at some point I was only half-joking, and then I realized that the entire thing is just true.😅

I just watched it recently, and to be honest, I don't understand all the hate this movie is getting. Sure, it wasn't 10/10, more like 6/10 or 7/10, and it wasn't nowhere near the brilliance of the first Matrix movie. However it was enjoyable and definitely much better than Matrix Revolutions.

As a Matrix fanboy and a game dev, I should never have watched that movie. Not only did I watched a bad sequel destroying everything that was set in the trilogy, I also cringed myself to death in that game dev part.

The Wachowski's sadly lost their parents within a few months of each other, and both of them have struggled immensely to reconcile their grief. Lana wanted to work on a movie that featured characters that she had fond memories of, to keep her mind off the awful situation. Thus, she started penning a Matrix Sequel/Reboot. Lilly however, felt that going back to a past franchise would dredge up too many memories and she decided to focus her endeavors elsewhere.
Yes, the studio owned the rights too Matrix and wanted to make a sequel regardless. But bare in mind how many times that project stalled before Lana finally put pen to paper. This wasn't purely a soulless cash grab by a studio, it was a passion project for a human being who had lost both her parents in a tragically short space of time and who felt working with characters like Neo, Trinity etc was the closest to familial comfort that she could get. No, she didn't want to make any sequels to the original trilogy, this is very true. But the reason she DID work on this in the end is soley because of her needing to find a way to cope with grief.
I do not deny that the movie isn't great, I also don't deny that Lana clearly worked in elements about the studio interference (The whole WB making a sequel thing in the film is clearly a stab at them) but I don't think thats because she made it entirely out of 'Protest' or because the studio ham fisted woke ideas in. It was because the creator actually wanted to make the movie, because she wanted to feel happy again, to go back to a time when things where simpler. The movie was made for her, not for you. Be angry about that fine, but that's how it is. The best thing she could do, knowing that WB would likely run the franchise into the ground without her anyway. Was at least make a movie that presented themes that where close to her own heart.
This movie is not a masterpiece, but its not a complete waste of time either. Its an okay action movie set in a familiar setting that exists purely to help a grieving woman cope with a devastating loss.
It is the definition of comfort food in directorial format. And if future Matrix movies do go ahead, the Wachowski's will not be attached to direct. At which point we can 100% blame the failure of subsequent sequels on a greedy studio.
I am not making any of this up, Lana spoke about it and her reasons for working on Matrix without Lilly at length during the run up to the films release. So much so that i went into the movie with this knowledge fresh in my mind, and enjoyed myself for what it was.
I'll cap this all off with a quote from Lana herself;
"I needed something to help me with the grief and inventing a story where two people come back to life was healing and comforting and I was non-judgemental, I just wrote it. I didn’t know what I was gonna do with it, but then I read part of the story to that woman right there [pointing to someone off-camera] and she said, ‘Oh my god, you have to tell this story’.”
I know this is a big ass comment but I felt it important that one of the driving factors in Lana's decision to make this movie was addressed because I see nobody else doing so.
