Xem phim khoa học viễn tưởng: Annihilation | Discussion & Review | Film Club
A.V. Club film editor A.A. Dowd and staff critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky are back with another edition of Film Club, this time discussing director Alex Garland’s Annihilation. Like his previous films, Garland tries to strike a balance between hard, cerebral sci-fi and pulse-quickening thriller, but our critics can’t agree on whether or not he succeeds in his efforts.

This beanie guy has no clue what he is talking about.
He must return watching the mummy or something.

100% agree… felt like someone rewrote "stalker"…. and poorly… and this is getting all sorts of praise now…. that bothers me… it just shows you can rip off a CLASSIC idea (not something unknown, that people might not notice) and be successful…
come to think of it… that's really the way the world works… so i really should just deal with reality better
the idea of the "soundtrack" has been lifted from "under the skin" and other movies
the "talking" bear is an idea that was already in a movie "the ruins"… to a maybe even greater effect actually in the predecessor…
come to think of it… not a single thing in this movie was original…
PS… i did enjoy the movie somewhat… just don't like the completely undue praise it is getting
Candy Dormizzi says
Loved this film
Zfiles says
Beanie, it's supposed to be slow with lots of pauses to build the tension and mystery.
RDZ says
Ppl who say the movie is bad just don’t understand it
Joseph Wambwa says
This film is odd… too many unanswered questions… why does Josie turn into a plant? Was it because she gave up? … and why don't the rest turn? Same with the duplicates… why were some animals duplicated and not all? (I have a theory to that one actually, probably did have duplicates but they killed each other due to their instincts… but then mutated? The croc and bear). Hmmm…
Plus the ending, only reason i think the clone Lena is the one that got out (apart from the eyes) is when the one left in the light house is on fire, she goes to her husband and seems to hold his head then proceeds to spread the fire around… why didn't they both ran out as they were mimicking each other?
Good film overall though, would recommend it

These Aliens like the USA way to much must be the most gullible continent in the world majority of Alien of whatever sci fi movies always based in the USA United States of Aliens……

The Shimmer represents the Talmud.
The lighthouse represents robust healthy culture without the influence of smallhats.
The Shimmer distorts and adulterates everything.
But a little bit of light and the Talmud's ruinous effects are neutralized.
Read about the Talmud. Everything unnatural and hideous is there.
The Sleeping Machine says
You guys are dunces.
Terrence Connolly says
Seems like the reviewers don't even know this was a book . They also mentioned dour and depressing. Aliens have invaded, it is mutating everything in sight soon to include cities and states and there really is no solution that anybody can come up with . yeah should be pretty easy for the characters to act all happy and carefree now right.
Barry Jones says
No mention of the human trait of self-destruction or did that go over the critics heads?
aedivian says
What ? No sense of danger or urgency? It's the most intense and scary movie I've ever seen. I liked the ending too since it made me reflect on what was really going on. Having the movie spoonfeed you with all the answers is not everyones cup of tea.
Vitor Munhoz says
this is the worst review I have seen in ages
VGO VGER says
The entire story was a sneaky way to slip in the science theory that life came to earth by way of a meteor.
VGO VGER says
Why was the bears face ripped off?
Seth Faggard says
Aside from the obvious difficulties with the movies coming out of Hollywood these days, Annihilation is an obvious case in point. The executives in the film capitol of the world are so out of touch with real live and how things are accomplished, they are so typically uneducated (even if they have advanced degrees from Ivy League colleges) that they fail to put together a convincing script and story line. Here are some of the problems with the movies writing or lack thereof:
The actress who plays “Ventress” the psychologist/psychiatrist is largely psychotic and unemotional – or her acting is just really that bad,
The research headquarters is set up within viewing distance of presumed contamination "shimmer" with no concern whatsoever to contamination of their employees,
Scientists are out in the open near on a balcony overlooking the "shimmer" without proper protective gear,
Scientist actually enter the "shimmer" itself with no protective gear,
Only a single scientific sample is taken of any biological processes within the "shimmer" as though the scientist never intended to leave or return the samples for testing,
Proper medical procedures are never followed in a complete disregard for the
breach in clean room technique,
Wife in the room with her contaminated husband without any protection,
Wife and main character has an adulterous relationship with a coworker and seems to elicit little to no remorse over her actions (but that”s okay I suppose because she is a modern “liberated” woman),
They say that they are scientist, but keep no written logs or documentation of the time in the "shimmer",
The biologist brings scientific equipment such as a microscope with her on the expedition but fails to bring gloves or any other protective equipment,
Though there are helicopters hovering all around the "shimmer" for no explained reason 24 hours a day, yet there is no perimeter observation posts on the ground or cameras outside the "shimmer" monitoring the advancement of the phenomenon,
The biologist and main character apparently just happened to get her minor in botany as well as zoology as she seems to possess as much knowledge of plants and animals she does human biology and morphology,
When one of the only video logs of what happened to the missing troops from a prior expedition if viewed, the females refuse to watch it in its entirety because it makes them “queasy”,
They go into the jungle at night with no flashlights or any other form of illumination,
Though there is marked accelerated growth of the plant and vegetation all around them, no mention is made of this though it is one of the most remarkable things happening,
Scientist who are interviewing the main character OUTSIDE an isolation contamination room are suited up in environmental suits while the patient is not. This is backwards to common sense as well as scientific procedures
All in all, this is a poorly done SJW movie with decent special effects and no common sense. Instead view a 34 year old anime film by the name of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind which – to this day – is still a much better production.
Martin Vaněk says
Even club of girl scouts could make better attempt to investigate Shimmer then that parody of expedition. But no pressure, it is just whole planet in danger so send some suicidal, eh sorry, self destructive types without any sense of responsibility in there. That should solve it. Comparable level of stupidity like we experienced in Alien covenant not long ago. Premise of movie is great but tons of lazy writing in the script buried it.
CM says
dude in the beanie is a clown that wouldnt know a good film if it punched him in his stupid face.
the_dawn_charge says
I thought the ending was surprisingly satisfying to be honest. I'm all for a good ambiguous or intellectual ending that takes a few watches to truly grasp, IF you can actually pull it off. But feel that waay too many films try to over complicate endings when neither the writing nor story itself possessed this potential in the first place and it ends up seeming arrogant and ruining otherwise above average films. I felt this was smart, gripping, visceral; and yet didn't try to embellish its quite obvious metaphors about cancer and such and didn't leave too much to the imagination about the ending while still providing a really good triller that had moments of extreme tension but without going full horror, alien esc style which for me actually made the scenes more powerful. Overall I think one must give credit to the journey and cinematic spectacle than nit picking its unambitious story.

This discussion needed to be longer than 6 minutes.
Liz Torres says
I thought the bear and clone scenes where horrific and very scary, so I don't get what you mean by no sense of danger, at least in the end. It probably could've been done better throughout the movie which I get, but it was unsettling enough I walked out of there wishing I hadn't gone there, and wouldn't watch it again. I don't like horror movies. I don't like feeling horrified.
Popo Bawa says
I am surprised that there is almost a 2/5 ratio of dislikes to this discussion. For a six minute talk I think it covered a decent breadth and depth, by two perceptive and articulate reviewers. Do people dislike it based upon their opinions about the movie? I don't agree with them, but I still respect their views and found the brief talk to be of interest.
Angel Cross says
These guys suck. "Lets use huge words and talk down on an amazing movie so maybe people will believe were smart"
Chris says
That damb bear my god it was creepy
sulphurman says
I think if you didn’t feel a sense of danger you missed the point of the movie. I thought the beauty of it all ironically being the result of mutations that effect ALL living things was very unsettling. I also thought the acting was great. It reminded me of a silent hill premise. All of these characters of course are dour, happy people don’t go on suicide missions!! They all have a sense of guilt and regret about them that I thought gave them all likability and depth. I will concede that the very end of the movie was a little underwhelming but I just mean the very last bit. The ordeal in the lighthouse was great.
